The public is becoming more and more aware of the dangers of sleep apnea and are realizing snoring can be a lot more serious that and just annoying habit. The most common reason patients don’t get help for their snoring is because they don’t know who to ask!

Treating Sleep Disorders In Your Practice

The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine recommends oral appliance therapy should be the first line of treatment for mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea when CPAP is not an option or is no longer tolerated.

For 60 million Americans, snoring represents a serious problem that can cause medical problems such as; hypertension, stroke and even cardiac arrest. The simple fact is, is that 40% of all snorers suffering from some form of sleep apnea.

As you know the “gold” standard for treating snoring and sleep apnea is Continuous Positive Air Pressure or CPAP. CPAP machines are usually only prescribed by a medical physician and the patient almost always has had a full Polysomnogram study done, before being recommended for a CPAP machine. The TheraSnore oral appliances were designed not to take the place of CPAP, but to be used when CPAP is not an option or tolerated by the patient. The TheraSnore appliances are for people who have simple snoring or those with mild to moderate sleep apnea. All of the custom TheraSnore appliances are an easy, effective, affordable way for the dentist or physician to offer a treatment for a serious problem.

The dentists role in treating snoring a sleep apnea is an important one and the dentist is often the first person the patient goes to, to ask for help. Click here for a study done on the effectiveness of the Adjustable TheraSnore and the dentist’s role.

Screening Patients

Screening patients for snoring and OSA is an important step when deciding which treatment option is best for your patients. Most dentists and physicians start with the simple Epworths Sleepiness Scale test. This simple questionnaire helps give the doctor a better idea of the patients sleep habits and if either further screening is needed or which treatment option to pursue.

Insurance Information

As the public becomes more aware of the dangers of snoring and OSA, insurance companies are recognizing the treatment and screening options available and are starting to cover them in their plans.

Distar is always reviewing our dental and medical insurance codes and updating our lists. Of course coverage will depend on the type of insurance coverage the patient has and the state you are in.

These codes are to the best of our knowledge accurate. Keep in mind however, that different insurance companies may use different codes. If you are not sure which codes to use call the insurance company, and if applicable, explain the treatment is medically necessary. They may give you a code on which they are more likely to pay. A cover letter describing the treatment for the patient is also helpful when sending in the claim, or if you have a referral letter from a physician, sleep lab study or other pertinent documentation may be included with the claim.
