How It Works!!

The SleepStrip is designed with 3 sensors; two nasal and one oral, these sensors measure respiration airflow. Worn for a minimum of 6 hours, SleepStrip analyzes and records respiration patterns, counting each time a apnea or hypopnea event occurs.  An apnea event is counted when respiration amplitude drops to under 12% of the average for more than 10 seconds. A hyponea event is counted if respiration amplitude drops to less than 50% , but more than 12%, of the average for more than 10 seconds. Respiratory events are counted for the duration of the study.

After a study is complete, the apnea and hypopnea counts are used to calculate the final test score, which is readable on the display 60 minutes after the study has ended. The SleepStrip’s intended use is for screening purposes only. Patients suffering from a cold, congested nose or any other respiratory tract illness should not use the SleepStrip; an accurate reading will not be taken if these conditions exist.

Reading the SleepStrip display:

The SleepStrip displays a single digit, which appears in black against a silver background. When the patients returns to your office for evaluation, the green sticker on the SleepStrip should be peeled off the to read the display, but not less than one hour after the study has terminated. Once the green sticker is removed the display should be readable.

The Final Score represents five possible test outcomes based on sleep apnea severity level:

  • 0 -- no apnea: less than 15 events per hour
  • 1 – MILD sleep apnea: - 15 to 24 events per hour
  • 2 – MODERATE sleep apnea: -   25 to 39 events per hour
  • 3 – SEVERE sleep apnea: - 40 or more events per hour
  • E – Error: - study too short or other problems

If necessary, place the Orange Reader Card (at least 1 card will always be sent with your order, reader cards are reusable) over the display area to make reading the number easier.

The display is permanent and the SleepStrip can be kept as the hardcopy record of the test. If no number or letter can be seen on the display a technical malfunction is suspected.
