Questions about Snoring and Sleep Apnea

What is Snoring?
Is snoring simply an innocent by product of sleep? Is snoring just an annoyance to a bed partner, and of no consequence to the one who snores?

To answer the questions above, all depends on the severity of the snoring. Virtually all of us snore from time to time. In fact, it is estimated that at least 50% of the world snores and out of that 50% at least 40% have some form of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). These numbers continue to grow everyday and the public is becoming more and more aware of the dangers associated with snoring. For some, snoring is no more than an occasional, inconvenient habit; but chronic heavy snoring can be more serious.

Why do I snore?

Snoring usually occurs when your tongue and the tissues around the back of the throat relax during sleep. This relaxation causes the tongue and the soft tissues around the back of the throat to relax during sleep. This relaxation causes the tongue and the soft palatal area to fall back and block (obstruct) your airway. This blockage reduces the amount of air going into your body. Your body realizes this reduction in airflow, panics and increases the velocity of air entering your body. The increase in airflow velocity causes the fine tissues in your throat to vibrate and cause the snoring noise. This cause of simple snoring covers 90 percent of the world’s snorers, the remaining 10 percent of the population snore, due to some form of nasal obstruction. For example, chronic and/or seasonal allergies, and deviated septum or a broken nose may cause a snoring problem.

What is Sleep Apnea and is it dangerous?

Apnea, a Greek word meaning “without breath” describes a syndrome familiar to most people as snoring. Apnea refers to the subsequent cessation of breathing during sleep. Sleep apnea earned its name when breathing actually stops for ten (10) seconds to a minute or more. This is called an apneic event. This apneic event occurs when the upper airway passage is blocked, or obstructed. This obstruction is due to the relaxation of the muscles, tissues and tongue surrounding the pharynx during sleep, causing them to collapse. For this reason, it is commonly referred to by those in the medical profession as Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA, this is the most common form of apnea.

Another form of apnea is Central Sleep Apnea. With Central Sleep Apnea, breathing simply stops during sleep and is resumed only when a patient awakens. In Central Sleep Apnea alone there is no obstruction, however sometimes Central Sleep Apnea and Obstructive Sleep Apnea can occur together, this is referred to as Mixed Apnea.

Is sleep apnea dangerous?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea  is the second leading cause of stroke in men and the fourth leading cause of cardiac arrest in women. Nearly forty (40) percent of the world’s population has some form of sleep apnea.

Other health problems related to snoring include…

Questions about the TheraSnore Appliances

What is the TheraSnore and how does it work?

Distar offers a variety of oral appliances to treat snoring and sleep apnea; though they all operate on the same premise, to keep the airway open while asleep

Original TheraSnore™

AdjustableTheraSnore™

All Proudly...

The TheraSnore appliances are custom fits devices that resemble an athletic mouth guard and are worn while sleeping. The TheraSnore eliminates or greatly reduces the snoring noise in patients and helps to keep the airway open.

When a snorer wears the TheraSnore appliance it gently moves the lower jaw (mandible) forward. With the lower jaw forward, even slightly,  the tongue will follow forward and the tissues around the soft palatal tissues can not retrude and obstruct the airway. In other words, you get more air and you don’t snore.

This image shows how the TheraSnore maintains an open upper airway.

Does it work?

TheraSnore appliances have shown to be 87-93% effective in treating simple snoring and mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

How long does the appliance last?

The average life span of the TheraSnore appliance is 18-24 months. However if proper care is taken and the appliance is kept clean, it can last much longer. Patients wearing the Adjustable TheraSnore and who heavily grind their teeth may lessen the life of the appliance and the Original TheraSnore may be a better option for these patients.

How much does the TheraSnore cost?

Distar is regulated by the federal government and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), therefore we can not sell TheraSnore appliances to the end user. Oral appliances such as the TheraSnore are medical devices and you must see your dentist or physician to obtain one. Price is determined by the doctor, however in the United States we have heard doctors charge anywhere from  $450-$1500.

*Be sure to ask at your doctors office if your medical or dental insurance will cover the cost of the appliance. Many to most insurance companies recognize how hazardous snoring and sleep apnea can be and are now more than ever willing to cover some to all of the cost.

What can be expected wearing the TheraSnore?

The first night you wear your TheraSnore appliance should be a quiet night. Don’t be discouraged if you wear your TheraSnore for only 45 minutes or so the first few attempts. Most patients are able to wear their TheraSnore completely through the night within 4 to 7 nights. Before you know it, wearing the TheraSnore to be is a natural habit. Also during the first few weeks of wearing your TheraSnore you might experience excessive salivation. Don’t worry; what is happening is your body is trying to “flush” a foreign object out of your mouth. Your body will soon learn to accept you wearing the appliance. Once in a while your body may forget and you will find you may have drooled on your pillow!

How can I get my TheraSnore?

TheraSnore appliances have been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and have given the TheraSnore appliances FDA 510(k) approval. The FDA requires that ALL anti-snoring appliances, including the TheraSnore be fit by a professional. The FDA clarifies a professional as a physician, dentist, or chiropractor. To get your appliance just ask you doctor, if your doctor does not currently provide the TheraSnore, either have them give us a call at 1-800-477-6673 and we can get them the materials they would need to fit you with an appliance OR visit our “Find a Doctor” section on this site to find someone already in your area!

What about the “anti-snoring” appliances I see on TV?

Recently there have been products advertised on late night TV that claim to stop snoring, and can range in price from $30.00-$70.00. It should be noted that none of these companies’ claims have been evaluated by the FDA and most only say they treat snoring not the more dangerous sleep apnea. The patient is essentially assuming the risk associated with these products without the oversight of a dentist or physician, and patients are asked to fit the appliance themselves! This is not taking in to account any dental or medical problems that could occur if a patient was to fit themselves incorrectly! These products may be ok for the very occasional, very simple snorer, however for those of us, where snoring is more than an occasional problem, I wouldn’t trust my life with something I bought on late night TV for $30.00!

How do I take care of my TheraSnore?

Your TheraSnore appliance requires very little care. It is recommended that when you remove your TheraSnore you brush off any debris with a toothbrush, also you TheraSnore should be cleaned daily in Ortho Fresh™ cold water cleaner. Using a clean where warm or hot water is recommended could damage your TheraSnore and will void the warranty of the appliance. You should also store your appliance in a cool dry place.

On a side note; be sure to keep your appliance away from your pets!!!! Many TheraSnores have been ruined because the family dog thought it was a new chew toy!

For your convenience every TheraSnore appliance is sent with a small cleaning toothbrush and a bottle of Ortho Fresh.
